The 2016 Maidenhead Closed Championships took place over the weekend of 19th / 20th March at the Cippenham Table Tennis Centre. The Saturday was well attended with good representation from all divisions of the league. Sunday was less well attended; however there were still good hard fought matches.
The Tweenies event this year saw Ricky Hardcastle regain the title he lost last year to Maciej Dlugomiza in a closely fought match. This brings Ricky’s total in this event to three in four years.
In the veteran single men’s event last year’s winner, Simon Vine, was defeated by Hari Gehlot. The pair went on to meet in the final of another two events. The veteran single men’s consolation produced one of the closest finals when Zolt Varga finally defeated Walter Aldridge in five sets; 6-11, 9-11, 12-10, 11-5, 11-8.
The division three event saw two strong players, Jack McDonagh and Peter Chipperton in the final. Jack took the title after four sets defeating Peter 8-11, 11-8, 11-4, 11-6. Both players would be able to hold their own in division two.
Both the Veteran Ladies singles on Saturday and the Ladies singles on Sunday saw the same two names competing for the honours. On both occasions Liz Bookman came out on top defeating Wendy Porter. However Wendy went on to win the Division Two event.
The men’s doubles on Sunday featured some fast and furious play when Hari Gehlot and Steve Miller took on Hari Prasad and Maciej Dlugomiza, the later games being very close. However after four sets and some rallies that had the audience applauding Hari and Steve took the doubles trophy 11-6, 11-4, 9-11, 12-10.
The mixed doubles featured the two ladies, Wendy Porter and Liz Bookman, who had been competing in the singles and together in the Ladies doubles now partner Ricky Hardcastle and Nick Sears. Wendy and Ricky took the first set and after dropping the second went on to win in four sets.
The Men’s singles event on the Sunday again saw two different finalists from last year. After working through the groups and following quarter and semi-finals the two men, Hari Gehlot and Simon Vine, who had dominated the weekend men’s events faced each other again. As in the previous two occasions Hari dominated, although Simon put up a strong fight.
The final event on the Saturday was the usual charity drawn Handicap doubles, each round seeing different pairings of players, the winners going forward to the next round. This event is always a bit of fun, giving players the chance to play in different combinations and with partners you may never have played with before! It was nice to see division three well represented, with three of the four finalists coming from this division. The final combination of Liz Bookman and Jack McDonagh defeating Rajin Soni and Peter Chipperton.

The Sunday doubles saw a number of new combinations of players. The closest of the doubles finals was between Maciej and Hari against Bas and Simon. The result was 8-11, 11-4, 10-12,11-8, 13-11.
The Ladies double this year had two of last year’s finalists, but both now playing with new partners. The Men’s singles event on the Sunday saw two different finalists from last year. Mark Banks returned after a year’s absence to take on Maciej. Maciej put a good fight, taking one set, but in the end the clinical performance of Mark prevailed 11-2, 5-11, 11-6, 11-5. The final event on the Saturday was the usual charity drawn Handicap doubles, each round seeing different pairings of players, the winners going forward to the next round. The 2014 Maidenhead Closed Championships took place over the weekend of 8th / 9th March at the Cippenham Table Tennis Centre. The turn out this year was disappointingly down on previous years, particularly on Sunday.
The Tweenies event this year, as last year was won by Ricky Hardcastle. It took him a five set final to achieve this overcoming Hari Prasad 11-13, 11-5, 9-11, 11-7, 11-4. Ricky also went on to win the division one title later in the day.
The veteran Ladies singles tile was won by Denise Rolfe who defeated Wendy Porter in four set. The veteran Ladies singles Consolation was one of the closer finals on the Saturday, it went to five sets with Jen Brown just winning over Janet Dawson a repeat of last year’s close came.
On Sunday we saw some new names appear on the Ladies Trophies. In the Ladies doubles Wendy Porter and Denis Rolfe defeated previous champions Jan and Gemma Chapman. Following this Wendy and Gemma went on to the Ladies singles final. This was probably one of the most exciting finals of the day. Wendy started well by taking the first two sets 11-7 and 11-9. Gemma then started a major fight back by taking the next two sets 11-5 and 11-2. Entering the final set both players were determined to win and it was close throughout with Wendy finally talking it 14-12 to much applause from the audience, who had witnessed some excellent table tennis.
The Men’s singles event on the Sunday saw Ricky Hardcastle gain the title against Nick Sears, only dropping one set. Ricky was last Year’s runner-up and this was a good conclusion to the weekend for him.
The Mixed doubles was also a close final. Elena Tant and Ricky Hardcastle defeated Wendy Porter and David Tant in four sets 11-9, 8-11, 11-8, 16-14. A unusual final with husband and wife on opposite sites !
The final event on the Saturday was the charity drawn Handicap doubles, each round seeing different pairings of players, the winners going forward to the next round. An opportunity to play with several different players, without knowing by how much you had to win each round by. The final combination of Wendy Porter and Elroy Hull defeated Elena Tant and Mike Collins.
